cylinder head coolant T junction (one way flow?)

Post by MrClancy »

I've taken the T junction off because it seemed the bleed screw was facing down instead of up, and looking at the part I've found something odd I thought I'd the Forum about! One side of the T has only a half inch opening, while the other side is over an inch wide. Why would one side of the T have this configuration? It would seem to restrict the flow of coolant, no? I have a 79 2000. Any ideas anyone? I was going to flip the T over so that the bleed screw was up, but now am not sure if for some reason the T is one-directional... not sure. Thanks!

I don't have an answer except the are trying to slow the flow from one direction for some reason. If your talking about the bleeder plug it should face upward at a slight angle. How long have you had the car? Do you think someone reversed it? Send me an email and I'll get it scaned and email it to you.

Lots of times the sensor gets put in the top so that its wiring doesn't interfere with the fan housing. I found this the case on my car when purchased. The top/bottom threads are equivalent, so it is a good idea to check it and as Mark says, put the restrictor towards the external tstat, and the sensor on the bottom. It CAN be put on backwards, which would put the restrictor on the wrong (radiator) side and cause cooling problems. I had to modify the fan cowling mounting holes a little, to move the fan/housing assy down about 1/2 inch so that the sensor wires wouldn't be chaffed and eventually cut by the housing. That would cause big operating trouble.
