What did you readjust to keep it running?

the most common reason for a 79 spider not to idle is a unplugged electro jet, or trash in the idle jet, which is contained in the electrojet (idle stop solonoid) on the drivers side of the carb there is an electrical connection, with the key on plug and unplug this connection. see if the solonoid clicks, if it does try to see if it idles now, maybe there was a bad connection. if that doesnt fix it, remove the idle stop solonoid, and then the little idle jet from the end of the assembly, look thru the center and make sure it is not obstructed. (then adjust back what ever you did to keep it running) if this doesnt help there are other things to try, and remember the problem might not even be in the carb. check the basics, ignition timing, cam timing, fuel filter, look for vaccum leaks.

edit: i just reread your comment about after it warms up: check the choke adjustment aswell as vaccume leaks. also make sure the carb is tight on the intake, they sometime get loose there causing a leak.

well i tested the idle jet it clicks so i removed an cleaned. replaced an reset air/fuel mixture screw to like 2 an a half turns out.
i had to turn up the idle set screw some it runs lumpy at idle,im trying to acomplish bet lean idle for when i go to smog here in california once that is done its getting richened up to be smother but currently have the idle just under 1000 rpms it is lumpy an i believe the distibuter timing is correct as the posisition its at has best power an throttle response.
but now the lumpyness of the idle to be figured out.

You might have already tried this but I was having a rough idle thing going on too. I unplugged the vacuum line from EGR and plugged the line going back to the carb and that smooth my idle out quite a bit. I think maybe the valve is stuck open.

You might want to give that a try if you haven't.

Good Luck!

So question I have is did this problem occur all of a sudden or did you replace some parts? Sounds just like my 78 did after about 8 months after changing the distributor cap. My cap looked fine but the wire on the inside of the housing had broken and every time the car warmed up she was just a bear, I played with my carb removed the points put in an electronic distributor new plugs and wires, rebuild the carb, tested the fuel pump etc etc finally brought it to an old school mechanic who after thoroughly looking over the car told me to replace the cap. Car started and haven't looked back. Good luck
