OK this may sound incredibly stupid. Thing is I read some where that the con and pistons are stamped 1-4 from the factory and should be replaced in thier original position when they are replaced in the block. Is this true or did i miss understand the whole point? Are there differences in the length? I have a huge hole in a #3 and need to replace it.

Yes, they are numbered, it is good practice to put them back in the same place they came from, however they are dimensionally identical.

The rod and caps are machined as a set and must remain together. They may or may not be matched to the crankshaft journal but why take the chance.
