Door Lock Cylinder Replacement ('81 Spider)

Post by simoboni »

I'm sure this is something a lot of people have done, so sorry for the dumb question :) . I bought used cylinder for my '81, and seabeelt sent me very detailed instructions on how to replace them:

"To install these, you will need to remove the arm rest ( three screws) inner door lever ( one screw) window winder ( clip ring - need something flat to get this off) and the door panel ( 4 screws).  once you can see the insde of the of the door , there is a small round hole near the edge of the frame.  you will need a long phillips screwdriver to undo the screw at the end of the lock cylinder, make sure you take a picture to get the orientation correct for re-installation.  otherwise you need to take the three 10mm nuts off the door latch retaining brackets ( two brackets one nut on one of them and two nuts on the other closest to the lock cylinder.and then slide the handle out of the door to get at the phillips screw)  Installation is reverse of dis-assembly"

Now, I'm stuck at undoing the screw at the end of the lock cylinder. This is what I see from the hole near the edge of the frame:

No screw...I'm sure I'm missing something but...what?

Thanks for you help!

Hmmm... I've always pulled the entire mechanisim out. Take the 3 nuts off and be freeking careful with the lock rod with the plastic ends, they get brittle and break real easy.
Once the works are out, you can take the lock out and have a look at the pull spring making sure it is in good shape as well.
The bottom inspection port should be open for the inevitable drop of one of the nuts.

Thanks, couldn't spend time on it over the weekend, I'll give it a try in the next few days!

Well, problem solved, like others have said I had to pull the entire mechanism out, which made things a lot easier. Now I can lock my door again :)
