No start and my hair is turning gray!
No start and my hair is turning gray!
Here's the reader's digest history, i bought a 1980 spider from a family down on their luck and figured it would be a fun project. I was told the coil was bad and it just need to be replaced and it would work. Obviously that isn't the case. The car cranks but is getting no spark. We have changed plugs, wires, coil, ignition module, rotor button, cap, and now i feel like i am just throwing parts at it. We did pull the distributor to make sure it was turning and it seems fine. We also changed the wires and magnet in the distributor. Timing belt is fine. Any ideas what to check next??

Separate wires go from the ignition switch to the starter and the coil. Check that you're getting 12V on the pink wire ("+" terminal) at the coil with the key on.

Thank you, after a long afternoon we decided to check the timing belt and the entire bottom of the belt behind the crank pulley was shredded. I manually turned everything to tdc and everything seems fine other than the belt. I have the new belt and I'm tackling it tomorrow, and advice on that would be great.

I absolutely love how people can name parts and things to do when asked. So Cal Mark wrote:make sure you time the aux shaft also
Sadly, I have no clue what they're talking about.
Maybe in a year or so, I'll have some expertise.

do a search on this site. lots of discussion about how to thread the timing belt and time the aux shaft. for the "prof", when you remove the timing belt cover (the big yellow plastic thing on the front of the motor), you will see 3 large cog wheels. the top 2 turn each camshaft and the bottom one turns the aux shaft. On the earlier cars with a mechanical fuel pump, the Aux shaft runs the pump. On all others, it is just a PITA to bang into the crank when it isnt timed right.
