charcoal cannister

Post by donm »

Man, I'm getting so confused researching this topic. I replaced my original ADFA with a DFEV and when I tee in the little vacuum outlet on the top of the cannister to the vacuum line from the distributor there's not enough vacuum left to operate the advance. What's up with that?

On the bottom of the cannister I've left one line connected to the tank and the other line blocked off at the cannister because there's no place left to connect it on the carb. If I leave the vacuum nipple on the top of the cannister open does it still work the way it's supposed to?

You can leave the top nipple uncapped if you want, or cap it.

It's not going to work the way it was supposed to, as the DFEV does not have the right connections for it.
The vacuum nipple that is supposed to got to it has a tiny orifice, so it only sucks a tiny amount of air. Connecting it to the full vacuum of the distributor vacuum line draws way more air than it was designed for.
Just cap it or remove it.

the vacuum lint to the distributor should share no other uses. it should go from the carb to the distributor only, unless going thru a thermal valve first. i would eliminate that anyway.

I've got a stock 32 ADFA.

Even though my Spider came from Calif it didn't have a canister or any other smog stuff.

Anyway, I just hooked up a canister I got from George. The car runs the same with or without the canister.

Oh, the reason I hooked it up was to see if it would improve the gas fume problem I have when I fill the tank. Don't think so.

The cannister is supposed to be one of the smog items that actually works well and doesn't effect performance. Unburnt HC fumes are a big source of air pollution and smog. I left mine on and made sure the hoses were intact.

There was a long thread about this awhile ago, whereby someone cut apart the cannister and replaced the charcoal; I think there were pics posted too!

I cut the top off mine, dumped and refilled with aquarium charcoal. Epoxied the top back on. No problems...a piece of mess and a couplemsprings inside to watch for, but thats it.
