Hello All!!

Post by pertyfly »

Hey everyone!

I am an owner of a '78 spider 1800. New to the site as well. From the Toronto area, and I'm having the body done right now so it's ready for the warmer weather. I'm rebuilding the engine, and definitely have some questions about this, and also about some interior, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Ahhh, it's stock right now. I'm doing it myself, and can't afford any upgrades. Bodywork is expensive!! :-)

I'm trying to limit it to one thing per season, and this is going to be body work. It's in very good shape, but I needed new paint, and of course there's always something to be found once the paint comes off!

Anyway, so I'm just doing the teardown of the engine currently. Can't wait to have it acid/steam cleaned and painted up all nice :)

I'm in the same situation except for the engine rebuild. 1978 1800 with a miserable interior and needing a paint job. Also, I've only driven it about two blocks but there's something dodgey about the gear box (will know more after driving). However, the body is straight without rust (just what I was looking for).

Pertyfly - Whereabouts in Toronto are you. Who's doing the bodywork and are they reasonable. I need my 79 painted and some minor dings hammered out.

I'm in the Brampton area - so, the West end...

Well, they are fairly reasonable, but I didn't go to the cheapest place, of course...because I DO want a fairly good job too! :)

However, let me see how it turns out before I make any recommendations...I hate recommending something before I find out how they really are. But I will definitely post and let you know.

Where are you within the toronto area? What condition is your car in? There's not many spiders seen around really, so it's always nice to be able to compare cars, etc!

Do you have any spare parts?

I used to belong to FLU, and I had the pleasure of meeting several spider owners from Toronto. There's also a FLU chapter there. I understand that there are four fiat garages and because of restorations, there are alot of used parts available. good luck

pertyfly - I'm near the airport. fiater is right, there are several garages in the TO area and they do carry used parts. I have seen the odd spider running around the city. By the way, don't bother checking any scrapyards or receylers. I tried them all and there are no fiats to be had anywhere up here. Actually, most laughed at me when I asked. I will be starting working on my 79 soon and hope to have before and after pictures. Know a good reasonable upholsterer?

LoL, nope! I wish.

If you find one, please let me know. I need my seats redone badly. This will be next spring, probably. I'm doing everything except the seats myself, I believe. We'll see how it turns out.

Thanks

Pertyfly:

I need to do the interior on my '78. The last machine I did was a '71 MGB GT and the seats were the easiest. The carpet was the most dificult. I'll be looking for an interior kit (which is what I did with the MG). With a kit the seats should be simple. What I need is someone on this site to recommend a supplier. I've found several suppliers but don't know who has the best deal (price and quality).

Ohhh..yes yes...I know

I will definitely buy a seat kit. What I meant about the rest of the interior, is I'm not buy door panels or anything like that. I making them all (not the seats!)

I haven't looked into a supplier yet since I'm not in the market right now

Welcome to the clan. I have a '78, too, but with a 2-L engine.
