Replacing water pump today

Post by 79spiderparker »

I'm putting a new water pump in my 79 spider today. I was wondering if anyone knows the specs of the bolts that the pump uses. I wanted to get new bolts because from the looks of it, mine are a bit rusted and I don't want to break one off the next time it needs to be changed. Your feedback is always greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Thread should be 6mm, I forget the pitch size and my thread measurering tool, taps and dyes are at work but I think it's 1mm, somebody could chime in and confirm here.
Simply measure up the existing bolts for lenghts.
"Fiat 80" bolts are a zinc anodized mild steel, 8.8 High Tensile bolts are not required.

If the bolts you've pulled are cactus then the chances are the threads in the block will be dirty.
Clean them up by running a well lubricated thread tap through them first.

The bolts are a common size available at any place that carries metric stuff (lowe's, true value, etc). just take one with you. These are small bolts and can be overturned quickly, so be light on the hammer. Dont know the actual torque spec but consider giving your 80 year old grandmother a 3/8" ratchet and let her tighten it.....should be just about right.

Bolts are an M6.
Only torque settings I can find in my books for an M6 is 14 ft.-lb. so I would agree, go grandma with them.

The bolts that hold the pump to the block are M6x1, varying lengths. One is a stud from the factory and usually very corroded. Torque these to 7lb-ft.

Bolts holding the water pump pulley on are M8x1.25x10mm. Torque these to 15lb-ft.
