Brakes

Post by SouthwestSpider »

I've read a couple posts on this issue, but I'm not certain how closely they apply. When I push the brake pedal there is a sound of air escaping and the engine speeds up. Is this the booster? OR the check valve? The reason I don't mention the booster hose is because it's tight on both ends. The check valve is loose, so if it's supposed to be fixed in place then I'm hoping its the valve and not the booster (we all know why $$$). Others have mentioned that the engine slows down when they have a booster hose issue - but mine speeds up.
Suggestions? Please...

Probably the booster itself. Easy enough to test, spray carb cleaner around the booster inlet with the motor running. If the speed goes up it may be as simple as the grommet that the valve is pressed into being defective. But the fact that this happens when you press the brake leads me to believe you have a bum booster.

if you had a hose or valve leak, it would be a constant vacuum leak. If the problem occurs only when the brake pedal is depressed you have a booster leak

Sounds like a booster leak around where the brake pedal rod enters it, or possibly an internal leak.
Try spraying WD40 there (you may need to peel back the rubber boot), it fixed this condition on a friend's Spider, and it is free :-)
If it does not improve then likely you need a new booster.
