1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
Hey guys. blew the head on my 75 spider 1.8 having a hard time finding another head as it sucked two valves and beat the heck out of the seats so now not machinable. Does the 2.0 interchange? are they different? Any input is appreciated this is my sole transportation.

I'd be thinking so as a number have put the 1800 on the 2L without any mucking about.(myself included) Should be a straight bolt on.
Hopefully the 2L is a FI head though...

I have a couple of heads I threw away when nobody wanted them.... and one I didn't. it's from a '76, as I recall.
Where are you located?

@ Maytag. I am in Port Richey Florida. 34668. Sothere is no difference then? it did not look like it in pictures but I wondered about the emissions thing. I just second guess everything. Please let me know on the head and I also need a stock piston and rod for the 1.8. I'm so sick over this. My only trans and I am kinda stranded.

So what is the diff on the FI head? are the valves different? Just curiouse

Two differences...Berek wrote:So what is the diff on the FI head? are the valves different? Just curiouse
1. Combustion chambers are slightly larger so you will lose a little compression. I used a 2.0 head on an 1800 but the pistons were 8mm dome on this rebuild so the loss was welcome.
2. FI head does not have the "smog tube" running through the middle which interferes with the combustion chamber shape so performance it is less ideal with or without FI.

and I may be mistaken, but I think the 2l head has an additional intake manifold bolt, doesn't it? 7 instead of 6? IIRC
IF someone confirms that, then you'd also need to use an intake designed for that head.

Re: 1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
IIRC 1.8L heads have 49cc combustion chamber volume, while 2L heads have 51/52cc Same number of bolts/studs.
Re: 1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
Ok so where the valves are in the head (2.0) is deeper than the valves in the 1.8. Hence the 49cc and the 51-52cc of compression. So the difference in the compression is relative to the actual space being compressed and has nothing to do with the valve size as far as more pick up is concerned? I'm over thinking it again sorry man.
Re: 1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
So if that is the case .... can I get away with shaving the head to increase the compression if it be that I can not find a 1.8 head ? Or is that possible?

you're getting into some serious stuff here.
Yes, a head can be milled to increase compression. but it's not the first place I'd go, since this opens up a lot of other issues.
You're going to pay a lot less for a used head than you will if you take a head to a machine shop to mill it.
Find the right head. they literally are all over the place. several on Ebay right now that the guy is asking WAAAAY too much for.
I quite literally could not give mine away, so I took them to the landfill and put 'em in the metal recycling bin.

I know what you mean. I looked at them and ya they are way over priced. I have no clue where to look been on craigslist and e-bay, called local junk yards to no avail. I will probably go with mathews in Birmingham but that was still $225 and i'm broke as a joke for now. Would love to get her back on the road before taxes but will probably be walking till then I guess. I miss my baby lol

The 2L FI head is identical enough to the 1800 head. The combustion chambers are slightly different but it in no way affects mounting it to the car.Berek wrote:Hey guys. blew the head on my 75 spider 1.8 having a hard time finding another head as it sucked two valves and beat the heck out of the seats so now not machinable. Look for 1592 heads as well. They'll fit the 1800.
Do not use the 2L Carb head, it is a piece of sh**

when I get home this evening, I'll look in the garage and see what I've got.

Re: 1.80block. will 2.0 head work on it?
That would be way cool> so let me ask this. If the 1.8 head is used on the 2.0 to raise compression the 1596 should do the same for the 1.8?maytag wrote:when I get home this evening, I'll look in the garage and see what I've got.
