Shifting "clank" noise

Post by royaldust »

Hello, i have a 75 spider and it has been making this weird metallic 'clank' noise when i shift gears,
it happens usually twice, the first one is when you shift the gear, the second one is when you release the clutch.

It's been doing it since i bought it (that's why i don't know if it's normal or not) but it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it's a nice smooth (quiet) shifting, sometimes.... CLANK!

Does anyone know what it could be? (or if i'm just not used to hearing sounds from the "outside" of a car and this is totally normal?)

Thanks !!

Check your u-joints In the drive shaft. Sounds like one may be sloppy.

could also be a loose shock absorber or failed bushing in a trailing arm

Does the noise occur while depressing and releasing the clutch only (without shifting)? If so, you may have a weak/rotted firewall at the clutch attachment point.

Thanks for the answers, i'm gonna inspect those things and see.
It definitely sounds like something is loose,
The noise happens once when i first step on the cluch (driving in gear and about to shift),
Then once when i actually shift.

Then it also happen everytime i'm driving and let go the gas (car starts to decelerate) and then step on the gas again,
No matter how soft and kindly i step back on the gas it still does one really loud CLANK!

:)

Ps sorry for broken english... Still learning haha

+1 with Dennis on U-joints. Other suspects are a ruined guibo (rubber donut at front end of driveshaft) or bad center bearing/carrier. Should be easy to diagnose if you can get the car on a lift.

Please do the forum a favor and report back with your findings. A photo would help the next guy with this complaint.

just a thought, has the oil been replaced in the gear box??? Might not be the problem but they seldom get refreshed oil....
