Simple advice needed - Camshaft Sprockets

Post by SouthwestSpider »

Is there a simple, straight-forward method for tightening the camshaft bolts without damaging the sprocket? I want to get these at the right torque spec but I don't want to damage the sprocket in the process and I tend to do those kind of things.

I wrapped rubber strips around the sprockets (pulleys) and held the with a chain wrench while torquing the bolts. Didn't damage the pulleys. It worked well, but an extra set of hands would have helped!

You can make a Fiat specific camshaft wrench:

2 foot long 2"x4"
old timing belt
screws and fender washers

Cut the old T-belt. Turn the 2x4 on edge and lap 6-8 inches on the end and screw it down. Butt the edge of the 2x4 up against the cam pully and wrap the belt around in the direction you want to tighten the bolt. Take a bar clamp and clamp the other end of the belt to the 2x4, or simply hold it tight.

I used a combination of these ideas! They worked fantastic!! Thanks guys. She's tighter 'n a g-string on a sumo wrestler - if it had to be torqued at 87 ft lbs.
