Convertible boot problem

Post by 124Germ »

I have the boot for the convertible top (it came with the car) and I hope I have right one, but I can't seem to make is fit right. I see where the rubber bungies go in the back and down the sides, also where the ends snap onto the side panels, but I have this cable that runs along the back of the boot. I can't figure out where they hook into.

I have attached the pictures of the cable and a place where it could attach if it was longer, plus one of how the boot looks installed. I would be willing to remove the whole top permanently, but I guess I should have it for those "just in case" moments out.

Thanks for any suggestions and help

I believe the cable should be an elastic

If that cable is what's think it is, it belongs to the top, not the boot, and should basically run through what would be called the rain gutter on a hardtop (don't know what it's called on a ragtop) and connect to that little tab that you show a picture of. There should be one on each side.

Okay, so the cable isn't used. What holds the ends of the boot tight, other than the snaps? The boot seems really loose the way it's installed.

Do you have two C shaped metal inserts that go in the boot at the curve point. These inserts have a piece theat hols the boot to the chrome piece on the trunk. I wonder if the cable is a way the prior owner thred the chrome notches and hooked to something inside the car to keep tension ob the boot.

I have the rubber bungy style things that hook onto the chrome pieces above the trunk and hook onto the studs on the inside panels. Is that what you were talking about?

I have no idea what keeps the boot tight and smooth, mine looks all loose and will flap around in the wind as I drive it around.

So , if I understand the proper installation of the boot is:
1. hook the straps on the back chrome hooks above the trunk
2. pull down the straps to the studs on the inside panels
3. snap the ends to the snap on the inside panel.

I guess I could have the wrong boot also, not sure what the correct one looks like installed. If anyone has some pictures of how yours in installed, that would help a lot.

Thanks

Jay, I always wondered how those straps worked. Where do they attach below? I've never really NEEDED them, but would definitely use them if I knew how!!!

I don't see any of the hooks in the top that hook to the trunk.

those hooks don't go in the top, they go in the boot.
