Grinding noise from oil dipstick
Grinding noise from oil dipstick
Noticed when I pull out dipstick ther is a notible grinding/metal on metal sound coming from oil pan sump or lower crank case. With dipstick in the engine sounds great, anty idea what's going on here? Can use all the help from you guys as this is way over my head.

Re: Grinding noise from oil dipstick
Keith, great idea but what is the source of the noise. Oil Pump, Fuel Pump of Aux shaft. Or none of the above.
Should I pull the pan to check this out?

Is it possible that the oil stick holder is rattling when you remove it?

Re: Grinding noise from oil dipstick
and your oil level was good? I'd be inclined to think it's something to do with the pickup and slight vacuum in there with the dipstick in place. you remove that and maybe sloshing starts happening and you are pumping air through the oil pump? Heck, I'm just grasping at straws here.
Re: Grinding noise from oil dipstick
Jay, the oil dipstick tube is bolted tight to the block. no rattle at all
Re: Grinding noise from oil dipstick
Danno, oil level is full up. how would a vaccume cause the grinding sound.
I have just instaled a new timing belt and at that time replaced the crank and aux cam front seals.

No, I meant that with the dipstick in place a slight vacuum from flowing fluid in the system might prevent sloshing in the oilpan and the pickup wouldn't be grabbing any air. Introduce a place for air to get into the system while it's running and you'll probably be pumping little bubbles into it. I don't know what an oil pump sounds like when you put air through it. I also don't know what happens when you pull a dipstick on a running car, because I've never done it!Wfolland wrote:Danno, oil level is full up. how would a vaccume cause the grinding sound.

a binkie, a pacifier. You know your car is like a little baby. take away the pacifier and she starts to cry! Just give it back and she's happy again.
