There's a grinding noise coming from just under the steering wheel when turning- sounds like a bearing.
Before I pop the wheel off (/go buy a 24mm socket) and poke around, is there something in there I can service or do I need to order a replacement part?
I guess I should really just purchase a shop manual...

I guess that's a wheel that steers, but not technically a steering wheel4uall wrote:or check this out for free, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay internet, always get several manuals

Re: Steering wheel grind
I had a steering wheel that made a grinding noise. In my case it would make a noise for one of two reasons. The prongs that make contact under the hub may have moved or even twisted. The cure is to remove the wheel, clean and re-orient the prongs if they are not all chewed up, and apply some dialectric grease. Inspect the metak on the hub to make sure it is not pitted or has any rough spots that will catch when turning. OR, the second reason I have seen is when the wheel is taken off or replaced the 24mm nut is tightened down to much when putting the wheel back on the column.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

A 24mm socket may be hard to come by. A 15/16" socket will work.

Re: Steering wheel grind
Funny this should come up. I just noticed a grind/rub behind the steering whell as well. I had driven over a patch of rough road perhaps a bit too quick and the plastic was rubbing against the hub. Easy fix.
