Re: Another no start...
well... it wouldn't be all bad to hear it fire.
so, I'm interested in the "sputter".
do us all a favor; disconnect everything from the ignition trigger unit, and reinstall as if it were the first time.
There's something clawing about in the back of my brain about the process.
Put the motor to TDC (with the cam marks lined-up as well). Be sure you're turning it the correct direction: if the LED is ON when you first hook it up, turn clockwise til it's off. Then back up til it just BARELY comes on. I mean, BARELY. Don't turn it any further than the moment you see that light come on.
then double-check it, by moving it forward a fraction of a degree, then cycle the key off/on. (not start) the LED should be off again. Then back-up that tiniest fraction of a degree til it's back on. and then tighten the holding-nut.

I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!
Re: Another no start...
Will try tomorrow night.
I sent an SOS email to a local Fiat expert to come for a visit also.
Thanks for all your input! I'll let you know how the ignition "reset" turns out.

Re: Another no start...
if you redo the timing, set static timing at 12btdc, not tdc. Make SURE you disconnect the harness from the coil during this procedure

Thanks mark... For that correction. I would've led him further astray. So Cal Mark wrote:if you redo the timing, set static timing at 12btdc, not tdc. Make SURE you disconnect the harness from the coil during this procedure

Re: Another no start...
Ummm...what mark is 12btdc? This may be the problem as I was setting the timing using the mark on the crank at a little past the 10 mark.
Cannot delete this post or I would. I realize the marks are 0,5,10btdc......i MAY have been setting more like 20btdc. Will run back through everything.

Re: Another no start...
Well....fooling around with the advance on the distributorless thingy...got the engine to start...run for about 2 or 3 seconds and then shut down.
Ahhhhhh...the sweet smell of progress!

Sounds like you are in the right path. Re-time that bad boy.

Update....
Randy (BEEK) was nice enough to come over...(THANK YOU)....in a couple seconds told me I had my adjustable cam wheels on the wrong sides....he switched and off to the races.....OOOPS! Except that NOW my brand new Airtex fuel pump is turning on, but no pressure...so much for my $80 Autozone fuel pump. Will have to figure out a better type fuel pump.
Least so far nothing serious with all the work I put into this car so far.
Once again...thanks to BEEK for coming over!

a good reason for a compression guage

Re: Another no start...
a compression guage would not have diagnosed this problem. the cam pulleys being reversed. the originals are marked, the ones jason has made dont have marks as to which cam to put them on. for those who havent worked on a 1000 fiats it would be easy to get them reversed with no other parts for orientation. looked in the shop manual which divers has, there was no picture showing which pulley went on which camshaftchrisfiat wrote:a good reason for a compression guage

Re: Another no start...
are you sure the fuel pump isn't wired backwards? I have used those Autozone pumps and they work okay. If it's running without pressure, either it's running backwards or has no fuel getting to it. The only other reason would be if you hooked the fuel lines up to the rail backwards.
Now that you've been cranking this engine for awhile you can bet any and all assembly lube has been wiped off the camshaft. I'd make sure both cam boxes are filled with oil before starting. When the engine starts, make sure it runs at 2k rpm for break in

Re: Another no start...
mark, the engine hit a time or 2, backfired and ran for only 10 seconds max. the hoses are hooked up correctly under the hood, and from the tank to the pump. i heard the pump running, but nor fuel pressure in the rail, as you know when the pump is on you can feel the fuel flowing in the hoses. we did not have a guage so i disconnected the return, and absolutly nothing comes out. there was a small amount of fuel present when the hose was disconnected.
i have never used anything but bosch pumps. im unaware of the capabilities of the autozone pump. my thinking is that if the pump is hooked up backwards (electrically) how could there ever been fuel in the rail?
set the ignition static timing as per your instructions to 12 deg.

Re: Another no start...
I tried switching the pump wires tonight with no luck. Before I change the pump I am going to remove the line just downstream from the filter and turn the pump on. Its the rubber line that goes from the filter output into the cab and connects to the hard line that run past the drivers seat. Its the only rubber hose I have not changed so I can kill 2 birds with one stone as it were. I need to make sure the fuel tank is not clogged by watching the input to the pump to see if the hose I installed is getting sucked together. I would imagine that the pump would collapse the inlet hose. The previous owner said the tank was redone.
