My 82 starts easily but won't idle until it comes up to 190 degrees then purrs @ 8-900 rpm. Also has very slight popping (backfire) after hard acceleration. Cold start valve? although car starts easy. Air leaks? AFM?
I'm stumped

What is aux air valve and do I replace or just look for leaks?

it is a device that allows extra air around the throttle plate when cold, effectively raising the idle. You'll have to remove the hoses from it when cold and see if it's opening

When you say open do you mean wide open or just a slit in a rotating disk like appartus?

The opening will be roughly triangular shaped when fully open. It's smaller than the diameter of a pencil by a tad.

Agree on the AAR. Test the resistance between the terminals to make sure the heating element isn't buggered up, then remove it, fill both sides of it with kerosene and plug it, let it sit for a while, shake it up occasionally, then dump it and spray it out with electrical contact cleaner. Let it dry, reinstall. It should work, this is a very simple device.sierraspider wrote:My 82 starts easily but won't idle until it comes up to 190 degrees then purrs @ 8-900 rpm.
