Crank pulley replacement
Noticed a rattle last night and it seems I have slack in the crank pulley. This is the pulley that the alternator and water pump drive from. Will a 2 L pulley work on an 1800 ? I tried to research last night and come up blank. I feel the key way may be damaged.

even with the keyway damaged, the nut should be tight enough to eliminate any play. Your problem may be as simple as a loose nut. the scary scenario is you have cracked the hub out of the pulley. time to take a good look.

Russ, I pulled the pulley off. The nut was loose. Key way doesn't appear to be damaged and no cracks to be seen. I think I'll just put it back on and tighten it up and see what happens. I will inspect the key first. I have a pulley off my 2l that I can use if it's needed and compatable.

The crank pulley on my 1800 loosened. How do you secure the pulley so it doesn't rotate when I put a wrench on it? psg

I used a 14" chain wrench with a pipe to bottom out on the shop floor. Chain around the pully on a belt slot that I don't use. I have 3 belt tracks on mine. Did this by myself and wasnt difficult

Yes and no. The inscribed timing mark is at the 2pm position at TDC (looking thru the radiator) on the 1800 pulley, and at the 10am position on the 2L. There may also be a difference in the "dish" of the pulley and the number of grooves. Lastly, these engines were "externally balanced" when originally assembled. If you examine the back side of a pulley, you will notice some drilled depressions around the outermost groove. If you swap pulleys from a different engine, even an identical model, your engine will be slightly out of balance. So the two pulleys will fit on each other's engine, but you probably don't want to interchange them.dmwhiteoak wrote:Will a 2 L pulley work on an 1800 ?
An impact wrench is the tool of choice to remove and install these.

okay it sounds like there is no magic slot just some ingenuity. I have an open slot for an air pump that is not being used and I can grab that as well. thanks. psg

I torqued mine to somewhere around 180lbs , don't remember exactly, using a long torque wrench. It is torqued to spec.

I checked the book and the torque spec said 88 not 180...... so is that what you meant? psg

Are you sure? I was always under the impression that in Fiats all the components are balanced separately. I certainly have swapped flywheels and pulleys among engines without ever noticing any balance issues.
A lot of people have installed aluminum pulleys and flywheels without re-balancing the whole rotating assembly.

The reference I am using is the Haynes manual and it uses 88 ft/lbs in two different locations, the specification chart and the assembly instructions.RRoller123 wrote:183 Foot-pounds in my manuals.

Check the various threads here and a couple of differenet manuals, it is pretty uniformly ~180 ft-lbs. Just to be sure: This is for the main/front crankshaft nut we are talking about, right?
