Stiff clutch pedal.

Guys,

Need some advice. I have read the posts about stiff clutch cables but I need to check my logic. The clutch cable on my sons 78 124 1800 has become stiffer all of a sudden. I did a clutch job on the car last winter, New plate, new disk, bearings, fork, etc. The clutch has been working free and smooth and I toook your guys advice about adjusting the cable nut to tighten up the play on the pedal. I have already braced the firewall with sheet metal at the clutch entrance to the drivers compartment. When I was replacing the starter last week I moved the ground from grounding directly to the body of the car to a bolt that holds the transmission mount. I bring this up due to bad ground means the clutch cable acts in it's place destroying the cable. I assume there is too much pressure as when my son depresses the clutch the firwall brace in place does bend. The braces are not welded in place but they are moving now more then when I did the original brace job. I would send a picture but posting has not worked for me on this site.

Here is my thought of things to check: tranny spring, cable itself (free flow), fork movement, pedal box ( but not sure what I should be looking for?) any thing I am missing or suggestions would be helpful.

This is a procedure that I have been developing for a little while on how to post pictures here in the Forum. Hope it is useful, and comments are always welcome.

HOW TO POST PICTURES IN FIATSPIDER.COM

Well that picture-posting thing sure is confusing. Took me forever to figure it out. Here is what I do:

First, you must post your pictures on photobucket.com or one of the similar competing websites. You can't post pics directly from your computer. So set up a free account there first. The instructions here reference photobucket.com.

Then in your FS.com post, look for the "Img" box at the top of the post, #9 from the left in the row of command icons.

Put the cursor where you want the pic to appear in the post (leave a few spaces after text is a good idea) and click the "Img" button/icon above.

Then go to the photobucket.com site (or competitor) and find your pic. Hover the cursor over the pic and a drop down menu will appear. Then click the "Direct Link" or similar button. In Photobucket, it will respond with a "copied" indication.

Go back to your FS.com post and make sure the cursor is EXACTLY in between the 2 Img boxes: [img](cursor%20in%20here)[/img] then right click and hit "paste" and the web link for the pic will show up in between the 2 img boxes. DON'T hit the IMG button a second time. MOVE your cursor out of the IMG info you just created before you hit enter.

Now when you post the post, the pic will be there!

Remember that if you delete the photobucket "master" pic, it will no longer appear in the posting here on FS.com

Also: there is a size limit to the pictures that can be displayed here, I think it is 750 pixels in width, someone correct me if I am wrong. So you may need to resize (typically downsize) the pics so that they fit properly and all of the pic is displayed and not cropped. What I do is really simple: I email the original picture to myself within AOL. AOL will automatically prompt you to see if you want the picture "optimized". Say "yes" and send this new pic to yourself. I then save it with a "small" addendum to the picture name and put this optimized picture up on photobucket. It works every single time like a charm.

Seems like it won't take the link from "google user content". Try Photobucket.com or one of their competitors and it should work.

Photobucket works for me. Very simple , of cource if if was any harder i would get no pics posted. Try it.

Try squirting WD40 into the cable sheath from the pedal end. Really soak it so that it flows down the inside of the sheath. If this frees it up then you need to look at some form of longer term lubrication since the WD40 is too thin to last for long.

Disconnect the cable from the gearbox, see if it moves freely by someone pushing and pulling on the pedal while you hold tension on the inner cable from the bottom. If it move freely, the cable is not your issue. If it's tight, go to your local motorcycle shop and buy a pressure can of cable lube and a cable lube tool. It's basically a rubber tube with a slice down one side, fitted inside an aluminium frame with a screw adjustable clamp. The split in the tube fits over the cable, the clamp closes up the gap and seals it. The tube from the spray can fits in the lube tool and pressurised lube can be forced up the cable. If you have trouble getting it to go up the cable, you may have to disconnect the cable at the pedal box and lube from the top down.

Thanks for the help. I pulled the cable yesterday and inspected looks fine. I chose a different path from the firwall to the tranny that provides a bit more flexibility and slack in the line. I think when I replaced the starter I might have changed the path of the cable. It seems to work smooooooooothly now.

Time to start the front end job. Just received the parts from Vick's.

Pictures: I will try photobucket and see what happens not sure why google picassa won't work.
