Tranny oil in the compartment the shifter goes into.
Tranny oil in the compartment the shifter goes into.
I just had my tranny hump cover off to put new foam around it and seal it up as I had a lot of engine noise leaking past. While I had it off I looked down into the compartment the shifter goes into on the back of the tranny and there was about a quarter inch of tranny oil standing in the bottom. I can't really remember but I'm pretty sure that it was dry in the past. Question is, is it supposed to be there and if not how did it get there?

Sorry I don't know, but I did recently read an old post that mentioned a small hex drain plug on the transmission (in addition to the normal drain plug) that drained a different part of the transmission were oil can sometimes accumulate when it "jumps over the wall". Not sure where or what that means but maybe it's applicable to your situation?

Thanks for the input but that is not the area I'm talking about. I really didn't explain myself very well and now that I have the tranny hump cover back on I can't take a picture. The area I am talking about is like an open top box over the tail shaft of the tranny that the gear shift goes into.

The area visible from the cockpit when the boot cover is off?

Yes you can see it when both the leather outer shifter boot and inner rubber boot are off.

Mine's wet, too. I think a little oil is supposed to dribble in there to lube the shifter.

Ya, that's kinda what I thought but it must get there through a shaft or something to lube the shifter and them drop to the bottom of the compartment? Otherwise it would not reach the shifter linkage.
