Initial engine start

Post by Divers »

So...engine is together and this weekend I will bolt the tranny et al on.

Question....on an initial build is it wise to fill with oil and turn the crank a few dozen times BEFORE trying to start. I already have cam lube installed. I am just a tad nervous to turn the key for the first time :)

Crank the engine for a few seconds with the coil wire off to prime the pump then replace the coil wire and start.

turning the engine a dozen times will wipe off all of the cam lube :(

Many things in an engine get lubed by splash. The faster you can get er fired the better to spray oil everywhere.
Let er rip.

After reading Mark's cam break-in instructions I had to laugh........his instructions assume my car will start and run long enough to break in the cams. :D

the best method is to prime the pump and fabricate a method of pumping the oil throughout the engine before starting. I'd make sure those cam boxes are full of oil before cranking it over
