Radiator Fan Disassembly

Post by aj81spider »

I have disassembled the radiator fan motor. However I'd like to clean and paint the yellow fan. It is firmly attached to the motor's rotor and it is not clear to me how it disassembles. I'll paint it attached to the rotor if I have to, but would vastly prefer to take it off (and clean the rotor while I'm at it).

Any insight would be appreciated.

If I remember the blade is pressed on the motor shaft. I removed mine by prying up on the blade base. it is soft plastic and easily damaged, so take care to pry evenly and gently. It's been a while, so may want to wait for confirmation from the other campers.

On my 80 it is held on by a nut, but not sure for prior years?

It was a pain to remove and was going to do some damage. Like you I wanted to paint mine and tidy up the motor. Motor wire wheeled best I could then wire on a drill then by hand with a small wire brush. Cleaned with brake cleaner.
Fan itself, brake cleaner and fiber pad to clean, prime and paint.(taped off the motor)

Mine (from a 74) didn't have a nut. It had a threaded end with a metal center piece, but would not rotate at all. I tried to pry it up, but was on a trajectory to destroy it, so stopped.

In the end I just masked it all off and painted it on the rotor. One side drying, the other side to be done tomorrow.

I did thake the motor apart and took the rotor out of the motor.

My '78 had a nut on the shaft & a roll pin stuck thru the shaft that just indexed into the fan blades (didn't hold it on), slid off fine once the nut was removed. I assume this is the stock fan assembly on the '78 even though the radiator isn't.

Here's a pic of it after repaint, you can see the slot in the hole where the roll pin kept it indexed.

That's the way my 80 is, remove the nut and the fan pulls right off.

That's interesting. I have the index pin, and the shaft is threaded, but there is no nut. It almost looks like the index pin is holding the blade on. I'll try to take a picture tonight, but your blade looks like mine - except mine isn't coming off!
