New muffler is LOUD

I needed to replace the exhaust on my 83 fiat. I got Vick's 2.25 pipe from the header back to their imitation Flowmaster muffler. I got rid of the CAT and resonator. It revs great and I liked the sound for about a week. Any suggestions on how to quite this bad boy down? I'm trying to find a replacement muffler, but the only ones I can find seem to be Flowmasters. At this point, I don't care about the increase back pressure.

Might have to cut the exhaust pipe and stick a resonator like a Thrush (or countless others) in your system.

I have the the Vicks set up as well.. identical. I installed $45 bullet resonator at the spot where the old CAT was under the shield and it really made a difference at RPM above 2500. I can hear the stereo now. It was really loud befor the resonator.

Stock system sounds excellent. Eventually you'll make your way back to stock, it is inevitable. We all go through the aftermarket parts craze for a while, then eventually, that stock stuff that fits and doesn't sound like you're 16 has no allure!

you most probably right, I have some after market stainless dual tip set up that I have never really like but being stainless it has lasted a while...I know your not much of an ANSA fan, but I just cant get over how good (and maybe sounds) it looks. something about the chrome tip with the red/orange band and the black crinkle finish. I will get one eventually and like you say most probably go back to stock......

I have mark's header and exhaust system including a carb cert cat for calif. and a flowmaster hushpower and it is loud, especially above 3500rpms I'm wondering if some sort of sound insulation the length of the exhaust would help, I know it sounds ridiculous. Old setup was stock exhaust with stock cat. with ansa dual tip and it was nice and quiet, but I must say I like the sound of the flowmaster at low rpms although it sounds a bit like a gansta-rice-burner

Amen. OEM works and you're highly unlikely to generate enough HP to need anything else unless you're into head and piston mods.

As far as the ANSA goes...that's all about taste. I think a twin tip under a single tip cutout looks ridiculous. I never really noticed them sounding any different, just regretted the ones I owned. Always took them off, always went back to stock.

I suppose if you believe the pinnacle of automotive engineering was 1967, you could ponder that question for awhile. There are others that understand there have been improvements made in the last 40 years

wonder if that would fool the testing emission guys?.... might be moving soon to a place that has testing

I have 2.5 stainless back from a header to a no name flow thru stainless muffler. I had the system custom made by some local guys and when I first had it done it was crazy loud and had an annoying pop like a kids' honda with a fart can muffler. I took it back and they put a resonator in line. Still loud but now more bass than treble! I love the sound and figure if I'm going to have a mid life crisis people should hear about it !

Agree, but no one makes a modern exhaust equivalent for the Spider. For the most part modern exhausts are still just piping, resonators, branches, catalysts, and mufflers, the technology is in the first foot or so after the cylinder head. So I would agree that something like that loopy header is a big improvement but after that you don't have a lot of choices.

Keep my perspective in mind - 90% of the people who own the cars want to be able to enjoy them and not so much work on them. If you want to help them achieve that goal then you encourage them to go with stock components. Stock fits (most of the time!), doesn't leak, and for most purposes (non-racing, non HP) is more than adequate.

Want the best performance boost for your money? Gut your cat, bolt it back on as an empty shell.

Obviously, Brad, you have never encountered the Aeroturbine. This is what exhaust WILL look like in the future. I install them in series for an even greater enertia charging effect. Alot cheaper and simpler than the pedestrian supercharger. http://www.ourdealsrock.net/images/prod ... inside.jpg
