Melting Metal

Post by pope »

Looking to get a MIG welder in a few weeks and was wondering what a good size unit is? Just like Goldilocks, I dont want one too big or too small. What are you guys using that you like. Not necessarily the brand, but size and features.

I got a Hobart Handeler 140. It is a 115 volt and does 25 to 140 amps output. The gas is 75% Argon, 25% carbon dioxide. Youll also need the wire ( not flux core ). I am very happy with mine, and the auto adjusting helmet is kick ass! I grew up watchin my dad weld, and love doin it also!

Does that 140 provide enought power for you in cycle time and metal thickness? Is there anywhere on the car that you cant weld on because of power?

It does 1/8th metal easilly, and ive done alot of angle iron, fixtures for rotissary, down to sheet metal. It does everything I wanna mess with. You just got to get the heat and wire speed. The rest is technique.
