1980 Carb Replacement
Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Brad,
I read your documents and they are quite excellent and much appreciated to be sure!!
Do you know if a 4-2--1 exhaust from a '72 will fit this engine?
Thanks

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
The 1972 exhaust manifold will have 4 studs.
Parsock: I think you might want an FI 4-2-1 system (and that would be the six-stud mainfold-downpipe joint) for block height reasons.

Yes, indeed... There are a number of geopolitical reasons to prefer a Spanish Weber over a Chinese EMPI;manoa matt wrote:Weber used to be made in Italy, now made in Spain. The other brand is made in China.
is there any engineering reason to prefer the EMPI?

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Can't say definitively since I've only seen/have Webers and never seen/picked up an Empi. Manufacturing tolerances, quality of materials would be a guess, but hey their drywall, structural steel, and paint for children's toys are all top notch.
Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Hi,
Have you done your carb replacement?
I'm in exactly the same situation, I've bought a 34ADF + 1800 intake manifold, but I'm new at this and like to know if it's "easy" to do and have some picture of the engine (to see how it fits, what to remove..).
Thank you.
Guillaume

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Any carb, whether it be a used unit, a rebuilt unit, or a "new" unit should be taken apart, cleaned and inspected prior to installation. Even if it came straight from the factory it can have tiny particles of casting flash or grit from the production process that need to be cleaned out. It's also not uncommon for the carb to need adjustments with regards to the minimum and maximum choke opening as well as adjustments to the position of the primary and secondary throttle plates. Unfotunatly these specification are hard to find even if they were ever published.
Jim, IIRC your problem was with the secondary throttle linkage. Problems do occur from time to time, even with brand name manufacturers. It could be a real problem with the linkage, the carb could have been droped at some point, or its workings are just misunderstood. Although I don't think I'd call it a piece of.... Its good to hear your problem is solved

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
You know it isn't their fault, but you wouldn't get another carb from them, it's a piece of sh*t, whatever. Maybe you dropped the carb or installed it wrong, or perhaps overtorqued the secondary by misadjusting the throttle arm. When you install a D series carburetor on a car made for an A series, you're changing geometries. You had a lot of people here try to help you out, and you shit - yes I said it - shit all over everyone with posts like this. You crap all over the car, put it for sale, blame the carburetor, blame the vendor, blame this and that.fiat218 wrote:I have to say this, I bought a carb from card direct, piece of shit from day one, yes I said that . You bought an EMPI to replace a Weber for god's sake. That's all kinds of wrong.

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
the EMPIs come from the factory, tested and flowed with alcohol. Many I've installed have not needed one bit of adjustment either with idle speed nor mixture. If you look at the dyno comparison video I posted of the EMPI HPMX and Weber IDF, you'll learn that EMPI is still doing r&d on these carbs. They've improved the venturi cluster on the IDF to alleviate the flat spot off idle and ended up making a bit more power too. Weber isn't doing r&d on carbs, they've moved on to FI. Weber has licensed a couple of mfgs around the world to produce their carbs now and EMPI is one of them.

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Sorry, I was ranting about the lousy, ungrateful attitude and not the carbs. FIATs have Webers is all I meant, in the traditional sense. Nothing wrong with EMPI.So Cal Mark wrote:the EMPIs come from the factory, tested and flowed with alcohol. Unlike the Holley-Webers the EMPIs aren't made of play-doh.

Re: 1980 Carb Replacement
Lol, give it up, No I did not drop it,over toque it, I installed it, plain and simple,it was the secondary that was messed up, and btw, I thanks people for trying to help. It hard to explain how the secondary would open and then just close by itself, so yes I got. Empi and it works like it suppose too, ,would u like me to send u this weber carb so u can investigate , just let me know ,. Thanks for being concern over my attitude, and I hate junk! I am not a mechanic, but I do know how things work or don't workbradartigue wrote:You know it isn't their fault, but you wouldn't get another carb from them, it's a piece of sh*t, whatever. It will be returned, I have had problems with this from day one, it prolly has 50 miles on it , yes I have issues when things don't work and when it should work, it not like there was a loose linkage or any thing, it a defect, even my mechanic looked at it but I already orderd a new one , thanks for caringbradartigue wrote:So you didn't even try to return it?
