Changing my tranny oil...additives?
Local mechanic buddy says that I should add some Lucas transmission treatment when I replace the GL-1 this weekend. Anybody ever used the stuff? I'm having some bearing growl when coasting in 1st, 3rd or 5th (noise goes away under power), thought maybe it might help.

No, do not add anything to the GL-1. The bearing growl may be comming from the rear differential. Mine made that noise on reverse engine loads, (non accelerating) and a month later the diff went out.

I don't think that's my problem. I just had the diff seal replaced and fluid replaced as well. The sound was there before and after that was done. Also, it only growls in 1st, 3rd and 5th, and as I understand it, those three gears are all on the same shaft in the tranny (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).manoa matt wrote:No, do not add anything to the GL-1. The car doesn't make this noise in 2nd and 4th.

The three gears you mention are not on the same shaft. Drive gear's 1-4 are on a fixed "layshaft" and gear 5 is separate, as is reverse. These are the fixed gears as I said, important to note the difference. The "moving" gears which have the syncro's to help you shift slide on a separate shaft above the layshaft. Whining is normally either gear wear or bearings in my experience. Your transmission may simply have more wear on the noisy gears. The parts are available, but can be expensive and difficult to install correctly. I have a few spare transmissions for parts but there is never a guarantee with used there won't be some noise remaining.JammerX19 wrote:I don't think that's my problem. There is a lot of information about tranny oil on this forum. Here is a thread that helped me.
