paper gaskets anygood?

I am doing a rebuild and bought a gasket kit which has many paper gaskets? Do they work well? Should I add some kind of sealent to the gasket such as gasket maker or some other type of sealer, or use the gasket alone? Should i skip the gasket and use only a gasket maker? Any first hand experiences?
