Oil Cooler
Oil Cooler
Although my 81 FI Spider has never overheated I think that it may run a bit on the hot side in the middle of the summer when we have some of those days in the the mid 90's - yes it does get that warm up here in the great white north! I noticed a used oil cooler that just sold on ebay and I was wondering if this would help to keep the engine running a bit cooler? Does anyone have one of these on their car or is it made more for race applications?
Re: Oil Cooler
it won't really lower the coolant temp much, and if you mount the cooler if front of the radiator it will restrict/preheat the air to the radiator a little. Your thermostat will keep the engine at 190, and if the radiator is flowing well it shouldn't get much hotter than that. Engines like a constant temperature, not a fluctuating temperature

Re: Oil Cooler
I run an oil cooler on the AC Coupe, but it has to endure constant high revs for long periods of time under competition comditions. The idea is to keep the oil temperature under control and it has little consequence on the engine coolant temperature. Most modern oils (especially the synthetic and semi-synthetic variety) can now cope with higher oil temperatures, so apart from slightly increasing the engine's oil capacity it's benefit is rather dubious.
