Stranded....

First time my car has left me stranded.
I drove it to work yesterday and it ran perfectly fine, on the way home I stopped and put a few gallons of gas in it and when I went to start it back up it just sat and cranked and never turned over.

I turned the key back on and realized the fuel pump wasn't running now
So I crawled under the car and messed with the wires and they were both on snug. But when I would take one off and put it back on with the key in the on position, the fuel pump would "click" but never stay running....

Is my best bet just to get a new fuel pump? I found old threads about Autozone part number #E2182 for a replacement.

Stab a voltmeter on the pump wires an make sure your getting voltage.

Checked all the conections at AFM, top of the coolant T? Taken the line to the cold start off and checked fuel flow?
I believe there is an inline fuse to the relay under the dash. Checked that?
I don't believe the pump will run with just the ignition "on". , the afm flap has to move from the initial cranking to send a signal to the pump.

Prior to this, you could turn the key on and hear the fuel pump running...I assumed this was normal of the car??

Hopefully soon I can pull the pump off the car and see if possibly it's clogged or something? And I will also check what you suggested.

No, this isn't normal. Someone either rigged the pump to have 12V continuously (you will find the splice at the double relay) or the AFM switch (inside the AFM cover) has been bent to make the pump run all the time.

But - since it was working - don't try to fix that yet. If you have 12V at the pump and the pump isn't working then replace the pump and filter, then move on to making the switches that control it work.

I would get a new FI filter and also add a standard carbureted filter between the pump and the tank to catch big debris chunks. This will help save your new pump.

You might be able to blow the crap out of the old pump, it might be a chunk caught in the impeller keeping it from spinning. I know more than one person who has done so. Worth trying in any event.

Factory says: replace both.

Bosch says: replace both.

If your pump was barfing up its innards then you don't want that filter. If your tank is rusting out then you don't want it. Take it out, carefully, and dump it onto a white paper towel in the bottom of a glass container. See what comes out.
