Clear Auto Trans Fluid?
Clear Auto Trans Fluid?
New to site. Just bought 79 spider, AT, carbureted, 65,000 actual miles, 2nd owner. Doing initial sorting and see that ATF is some kind of clear oil, not colored. Trans seems to work fine, but I'm thinking maybe should have it flushed, replace filter, and refilled with DEXRON (?). What do you think?

I'd have to look up the specified transmission fluid on these. However, I think the aurtomatic transmission on the spider is the same transmission used on the chevy chevette. therefore Dextron III should be fine.

Owners manual from 79 just says Dexron is the ATF to use. From what I've read, they are now up to Dexron 6 but all versions are supposedly backwardly compatible. Everything I could find says that ATF is always red/pink or sometimes green. Whatever is in this trans is definitely just clear and I wanted to be sure this wasn't some Italian/Euro special fluid.

Re: Clear Auto Trans Fluid?
It is possible that someone was confused and put a type of mineral oil in there? The GL1 that the manual trans takes is basically a mineral oil. How long or how many miles have you put on the car since you owned it. I can't imagine it has been very long since the transmission fluid was changed last with clear looking oil. Hopefully that is not a radar blip of a possible problem with the trans masked by mystery oil?
