I am just guessing.. I really have no idea.. was driving to work yeterday, and about 10 minutes in the engine just seized up.
no noise, or overheating or nothing just stalled out and then was seized up tight...

I would suspect a broken timing belt and the now out of time Auxiliary shaft fuel pump lobe is interfering with a crankshaft counterweight.

Have a look into your timing belt upper cover to see if the belt has broken or looks to be missing blocks or has broken.

Try putting it in fifth and rocking the car backwards a few inches to spin the crank away from the fuel pump lobe on the aux shaft. Don't force it and just rock the car back a few inches no more.

Don't try and force anything as you can crack the block, break the aux shaft and the crank.

Didn't you just buy the car? Good luck and let us know what happened.

All is not lost, I'd its just the timing belt, bottle is likely wrong with it aside from resetting the timing and putting a new belt on. Yours is a non interference engine so the valves are not bent and nothing else should be wrong if it's just the belt that failed.

Of course if it was a more catastrophic failure, it could be time for a new engine. As the bodies don't last as long as the engines generally do, you may be able to come across a good used one from another forum member.

Hopefully it's just the timing belt. Let us know.

Would the 82 have a problem with the aux shaft hitting the rod? There is a guy in Winston-Salem that is a Fiat mechanic. If you need his information, pm me. He's the only one other than my husband or me that I will let work on my Fiats.
