Oil Pan Gasket

Have a 1979 Fiat Spider 2000. Need to change the oil pan gasket.. Is leaking something terrible. Am I able to to this with the engine in the car or do I have to take out the engine. I know in some case you don't have to.... anyone?

Might get lucky in just raising the engine. Have to undo the motor mounts, and jack at the bell housing. Hopfully you get it high enough that you can get at the two 13mm bolts on the oil pump to drop it. There are baffles in the pan that make it a bit of a pain to pull the pan while the oil pump is still mounted. I've pulled a pan this way but the oil pump pickup was broken so the pan came out easy.

My manual says to jack up the engine, then undo the horizontal bolts on the cross-member. Then loosen the cross member vertical bolts until about 2 threads are showing. This should drop the cross-member enough to get the oil pan off.

There's a lot good about these cars, and a lot to like, but this certainly is not part of it. Unbelievable.
