Well, I'm at my wit's end. '81 FI. Stalls at lights almost as soon as I take my foot off the gas and engine revs are dropped to about 1400 rpm. Perfectly fine when starting out (cold) and for quite a while, and then "bam" - almost every stop it stalls. Runs great otherwise. Funny thing is that it will stall and then if I'm cautious slowing down even a minute later, it will often not stall! This problem has been getting worse, and is now very frustrating.
I've swapped AFM, coolant temp switch, air hoses, checked air filter. Adjusted the idle (the two screws on the throttle body). Checked the throttle switch. Done all the FI inspection steps. What am I missing?
Any ideas? Much appreciated. By the way, I think it is quite a lot better in cooler weather - not heating up so fast I guess.

How's your ignition timing?

Re: Inconsistent Stalling
Could a leaky cold start injector cause this? Flooding it as it returns to idle. I suppose you could disconnect it after warmup and see if there is any improvement.

Hmm...last fuel filter change? Lots of fuel pressure?
How's it going over on the rock anyway launie?

Re: Inconsistent Stalling
It runs so well (other than at stops) that I can't imagine any problem with ignition. But I'll check timing anyway.
Thenk I'll change the filter and pump (have extras anyway), and maybe rig it up so I can watch pressure while driving. Too busy to do anything for the next few days, but I'll let you know what happens. Thanks all.
It's been a super summer finally, and I've enjoyed some terrific runs with the Spider into Victoria and on our windy roads! Had to replace the starter finally (horrible job), and the master cylinder failed, but that was easy. This car keeps on giving me pleasure!

Re: Inconsistent Stalling
The reason I asked is because at one point my timing had gotten way off somehow and it didn't affect running but affected the idling something terrible.

Re: Inconsistent Stalling
just a thought, I had a problem that stalled the car (mine is FI as well) when I put my foot on the brake (I could also hear a hissing sound as well) It ended up being a faulty valve in the brake booster that would let excessive air in the system when braking which made the booster ineffective making it very difficult to stop.
Cheers David
