partially functioning thermostat

Post by steve8462 »

i think my Thermostat is not working properly. here is a picture of it in cold position, and in hot position (200 degrees) the second picture is a bit blurry due to the steam. it seems to be sealed in that housing unit and i cant figure out how to drill the small air release hole i see you guys talking about. any thoughts about the open-close range of this thermostat?

I don't know about others, but I can't make out what's going on with your stat. I've never seen one like it and the cold view looks like a cutaway cross section.
In any event, do you get the valve plate visible from the orientation in my picture? It shows where you can drill the hole.

Yours looks like it may have lived a long and useful life, might be time to retire it.

Is it an internal TStat up in the top of the engine? Or over on the passenger side suspended by the hoses?

Good question! That hadn't occured to me.
If that's the case the hole is meant for the external stat. The leg that faces the bottom of the radiator is the first to get coolant and air gets trapped in it as it's pushed out in the first part of filling the system. The hole is for letting this air get past the closed stat. When coolant is on the upper side of the stat it can drip down through the hole and displace air also.
