Electric Fuel Pump location

Post by Wfolland »

Can anyone direct me as to where the electric fuel pump should be located on my 1979 Spider?. Currently mine is located under the hood just prior to going into mechanical fuel pump. Have been told the electric pump should be located further back and closer to the fuel tank. My engine is mostly stock except for a Weber 32/36 and single plane manifold upgrade. Any suggestions on electric fuel pump manufacturer?

I've installed many electric fuel pumps in the trunk, the one thing i can tell u is if its a noisy pump your
going to hear it. The last pump i installed was a Mallory it wasn't the cheapest but smooth very little noise
couldn't be heard in the car.

79 Spiders came stock from the factory with a mechanical pump. The mechanical pump is located under the intake manifold. You should see if its still there???

On my 79 I removed the fuel pump lobe from the aux shaft and fitted an electric pump under the car , right below the rear seat on the drivers side. Right by the metal fuel lines poking out by the rocker panel and trailing arms.

an electric pump should be as close to the tank as possible and mounted with rubber insulating blocks

Don't buy any "square" electric pump, the clicking noise will drive you crazy! I put in an old used low pressure Carter in mine.

if the pump has an adequate fuel supply and rubber mounts it will be quiet. Pumps are noisy when they are starved for fuel

I just replaced the pump in my 76. Mine was the rotary type and very noisey. I asked Mark at Allison for his recommendation. Mark sent me a Facet electronic pump. I mounted it right next to the fuel tank. It is dead quiet and works great!

Yes these are very noisy low dollar pumps i haven't seen any like this around for at least a decade i'd be surprised if they are still being manufactured.

I used a Carter P60504 Electric Fuel Pump, make sure its the one for low pressure carbs, 3.5lbs
Nice and quiet

the Facet pumps are still being built and they are not a "low cost" poor quality pump. There are several knock offs on the market though

thanks much to Mark, djchan,Schnauzer,Daniel & Lanciar for updates on pump.

Here is my situation, the pump installed under the hood is a Facet, what puzzles me is that a previous owner has installed a toggle switch in the cockpit to turn pump on and off. spider seems to run fine without the pump on. if I didn't mention it before the pump is located in the fuel line prior to block mounted mechanical fuel pump. why this configuration?, anyone got any idea why ?,

It is possible that after sitting fuel drained back to the tank. The mechanical pump on the engine takes a long time to pump all the way from the tank. P/O probably activated his electric pump for a short time prior to starting cold then shut it off when the mechanical pump on the block was primed. Hence the switch.

Sounds like a belt and suspenders approach to me. Back when I had my 79 Spider, I eliminated the mechanical fuel pump, and mounted an electric back in the trunk. I found some rubber insulating blocks to mount it on, as others have recommended.

So, here was my order of fuel flow:

Gas tank ---> inline fuel filter --->electric pump---> factory metal lines to engine bay--->another inline fuel filter---" carb fuel intake.

Back in the day, Bayless made a really sweet block off plate to use when you remove the mechanical fuel pump.
