I'm getting ready to pull the engine and tranny and I noticed that the engine has a lift point on the front of the motor by the driver's side cam pulley, but none at the back. Where is the best place to hook the load leveller chain at the back?
Any tips for pulling this motor? I need to pull it out to replace the tranny and I figure I can replace the stock intake/carb, timing belt and any leaky seals while I have it out.

If it were me, i would leave the engine be and just pull the tranny. I know my 80 has a long tranny tunnel that allows me to pull the tranny without jacking up the front of the engine. For the other mods, all that can be done easily with motor in the car.

I don't mean ti hijack the topic,.. but,...
I need to swap out the transmission on my '70 spider. Can this be done without removing the motor? I have 4 standard jacks stands, but I am not sure if there will be enough clearance.

Jim,I just replaced mine last week and that's what I used. 4 jack stands and a hyd floor jack. Did not pull motor. The hardest part were the top two bell housing bolts. You need a long extension plus some.

I figured it would be easier to pull everything as one unit, rather than just pull the tranny...

If you are fortunate enough to have access to a hoist, the tranny can come out in about 45mins to an hour or less.
A swivle 19mm for the top two bolts are a must. The top starter bolt is a pain as well.
If the engine comes out,you have to drain the engine, fill it again.... pull the rad... wires...
Tranny for me was the 4 bolts at rear of drive shaft , drop and pull. tranny mounts and reverse wire, 4 tranny bolts, 3 starter bolts (disconect battery!!!) pull the tranny a bit and it more or less fell in my arms (about 70 pounds or so)
I took the shifter sleave off and the "tray" on the lower consol as well. It was easer if I dropped the shifter lever when installing the tranny.
A swivle 19mm for the top two bolts are a must. The top starter bolt is a pain as well.

no lift, just ramps and jackstands.
Sounds like just pulling the tranny is the way to go...
Now if I could just figure out the upper shaft clips! I thought the Germans were the over-engineering kings, but this is amazing!

I got good advice in this forum years ago that suggested the top two bolts are easier to get to through the cockpit shifter opening. Just use two long extensions (with tape) and the swivel.narfire wrote: A swivle 19mm for the top two bolts are a must. The top starter bolt is a pain as well.

Thanks for all of the tips and tricks! Especially the reminder about the battery,.. I seem to always forget about it when I start - and then get quickly (and rudely) reminded when the sparks fly!
