How much pulley noise is normal?

Post by parsok »

I've finally gotten the engine noise under control. Turns out I had a exhaust gasket leak that was causing the 'ticking noise'. Now that it is quietened down I noticed the pulleys make a fair bit of noise, in fact these are now louder than the engine. There is no squeak, squeal or other un-towards noise that I can hear, just louder than my regular cars. Right now I have the timing belt cover off but I don't think putting it on will make much of a difference.

Is this normal or should I be looking for a bearing problem or something?

Thanks in advance.

remove alternator belt and spin water pump and alternator by hand. if there's ANY noise coming from either, that means bearings are busted.

remove the timing belt and check it for damage. tensioner bearing may be gone too. also, if some dumbass had put the timing belt wrong way around, it can make noise.

'fraid of that

Fortunately I'm not the dumbass but what do you mean but timing belt wrong way around? The teeth are pointing in, is that what you meant?

well if teeth were pointing outwards engine wouldn't run, right? i mean i never tried...

some timing belts have rotation direction marked. you can install it the right way and the wrong way around. if installed the wrong way around, it's easyer to jump a tooth or two and can sometimes make a slight buzzing noise, depending on the belt manufacturer.
