Under Dash Leak
Hi...
Caught in the rain twice in a few weeks, no real world complaints about sealing but:
Water is dripping from under the driver's dash, high and low and not a little.
What's the drill, please?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Under Dash Leak
Assuming you don't want to put drain holes in the floor, you might want to take off the cover holdingthe ws wiper assembly and check for rust holes underneath. Rain water is supposed to drain from the fresh air intake vents through the drain pipes through the firewall but on my car there was a rust hole in the drain pan which leaked water right on my foot. Sealed it up with silicone and no more leaks.

Re: Under Dash Leak
before you follow any of these cockamaymee ideas, check your drain holes. some models have soft rubber nipples that clog easily with debris and wont allow drainage of that area. the earlier cars had vent ports under the dash that would let water in when that area was full of water. there are 2 of them located on the firewall

Re: Under Dash Leak
and obviously be sure that it is rain water and not coolant leaking from the heater valve, passenger side.

A pita for sure. Mine was weeping a little when I bought it from having sat for years, but the leak stopped as the car was driven and the valve was cycled. Thanks be to the big guy!

Re: Under Dash Leak
Hi,
Yes, it's been awhile; two engine rebuilds, a second set of new springs and shocks, and a crossmember replacement ago.
Since originally posting this problem and reviewing the comments, I've had the cowl panel off; there are no breaches of the metal, the firewall drains are clear; what else could this be?
...The weather in Watkins Glen on the 27th look iffy.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Under Dash Leak
take a look at your heater valve from under the dash and see if any coolant is dripping from it. should be able to see it from the PS.

Thanks, but it's driver's side and rain/hose related. (Heater valve was years ago...)
Thanks again,
Mark

Re: Under Dash Leak
Mark check the rubber gasket around the windshield, it usually comes away from the chrome in the bottom corner. What I did was fill with black silicone or you can use black RTV , worked like a charm.

Hi Nick,
I'll have a good look at the gasket.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Under Dash Leak
Another possibility. Remove the wiper cowl. In the rear corners, driver and passenger, there is probably a small gap where all the metal meets.
My body shop where I had my car painted gave me some putty like stuff. Sorry, I don't remember what he called it. I used this to squeeze into place and seal the holes. It comes in a coiled role, moldable like putty, sticky stuff but never dries out.
