Cleaning Piston and Valves?
Cleaning Piston and Valves?
The manaul says to decarbonize and not to clean the carbon from the top of the piston bores but to clean the top of the pistons with a plastic scraper and solvent. I been using intake/carb cleaner with a cotton undershirt which has been working, piston 1 and 4 are flat with the block but 2-3 are not. Is it possible to raise 3-4 with the crank or not possible because of the aux shaft will interfere? Would you guys even bother cleaning the carbon buildup because I'm not rebuilding the head. I've replaced all the front seals and gaskets, rear cam housing gaskets, valve cover gaskets a little at a time since I bought the Engine Head Gasket kit. The only gaskets I will not be replacing is the cam box gaskets as I do not know how to adjust the valves. I checked the head with a straight edge and looked flat. I guess I should really bring it to a machine shop but not sure how long I'm gonna keep the car for. Trying to avoid putting much more money into it but...we'll see.

Re: Cleaning Piston and Valves?
it should be right doing it by hand, it it feel tight ,move the Aux wheel till it's okay, just remember to put it all back correctly prior to putting the head back on..
Cheers David

Re: Cleaning Piston and Valves?
I guess the question is why is the head off in the first place, that would help in determining if the head should be skimmed or not. Ive never been fond of the straight edge method of checking for a true head as heads can warp from corner to diagonal corner making them difficult to check (especially with the valves still in).
Decarbonising the top of the piston is an ok thing to do but you will get more joy from a clean set of valves and seats, especially intake valves. Nothing quite like a smooth clean set of valves for atomised fuel to slide past on the way in.
No problems with turning the engine with the aux shaft in place just turn it little by little as you turn over the engine and as divace mentioned make sure it's lined up before assy.
