Post by FirstSpider »

hey, I'm having this issue with my manual driver's side window, and I was hoping you all could help, when I go to roll it down I get this clicking/grinding noise but the window won't budge, I can pull the window up with my hands and roll it down just fine, but i can't roll it up, any help would be appreciated.

You will need to get the door panel off to see what is going on in there. The crank mechanism sounds like it has toasted. After taking out the screws for the door panel, the arm rest and the door release latch, the only trick is getting the C-Clip off of the window crank handle. There is a great special tool available for this for just a few bucks that is well worth it. Search on window crank removal tool or something like that and it will come up. Here is a short video showing it.

Then the panel lifts straight up and off the door frame. The top of the door panel has a lip that fits over the frame. Once in there, it will be more clear what the problem is.

Do you have a good manual? There is a contraption of criss-crossing wires and pulleys that controls the window, with some sort of gear arrangement at the crank. I am not too familiar with it, having not done this repair myself. There are two large semi-rigid "cardboard" pieces that are taped over large openings that act as splash shields that you can remove to get a better look. Just remember to reinstall them when it all goes back together. They register at the bottom of the hole on folds in the cardboard.

When the door cover is off, you'll see acouple of grey? plastic covers, pull those off. Might be some tape covering the smaller holes around the edge, pull that off as well.
Now you should be able to see what is going on inside when you slip the crank handle back on and try and turn to raise or lower.
There are two clips that attach the window to the cable, a phillips screwdriver to undo the screw(s) and slide the glass up.
There are a couple of pully wheels on the bottom that are undone from the bottom of the door....
The window crank mechanisim would be available from any of the cars below being parted out.
Fiddly work, not much room but do-able.
An extendable magnet is handy for retrieving the nuts that continually fall to the bottom of the door.

The window crank mechanism is avalible from the vendors and not that exspesive. I have replaced both of mine .It was not hard just a PITA. Just be sure to get glass adjusted right before putting the panel back on.

Check the cable. I have electric, but had the same sound. When I took off the panel I noticed the cable was starting to fray and snagging on a pulley when the window went up.
