thermostat orientation

Hey y'all:
until I find an early water neck, can someone help me with the correct orientation of the thermostat?
I've looked through at the photos of engine bays, and there doesn't seem to be any consistency that I can see.
Which outlet goes where?

the way I understand it is to have the outet that is blocked connects toward to bottom of the radiator (you may have to drill a small hole in the diapgragm to help bleeding the air out).
The way it works is it cycles through the water out the water pump into the thermostat and back out the top to the T piece until it warm up then it flow water via the radiator (the flow direction may not be correct but you get the idea)
