Hi,
A short note as to why I have joined this great forum!
For the past year I have been renovating a 1969 1438cc AS Fiat 124 Spider with my father. The car had been imported into the country in 1992 from California and had been stood still in dry storage up until February last year when work was started.
Considering a long and lonely 15 years covered up and dreams of getting her back on the road, the dream had started to become reality. My initial plan was and still is to keep her as original as possible, with the obvious updates and requirements.
The body was in excellent condition considering the years of bad weather etc. and very minor rust problems were discovered on the "strip down".
A total "Nut and Bolt" rebuild from the floor up has been carried out through 2007. Engine and transmission rebuild, conversion from left to right hand drive and body work that needed straightening plus alot of other bits and bobs. Alot of hours have been spent on her so far and up until recently light can bee seen at the end of the tunnel.
We are now at the stage of getting the surface details completed and she is all ready to be painted a light metallic blue with black leather interior and hood.
I have entered her into Classic Le Mans' "Happy Few" for car enthusiasts and look forward to the drive down through France.
My initial plan is to have her running for May and give her a good shakedown prior to July! The wait of hearing the engine turnover and whistle into sound is something I cannot wait for.
Please see the pictures below showing:
her 15 year resting place,
engine and transmission, before and after,
a very scary water pump!
The rear axle before and after,
and as she is today
Bring on those sunny days!
Cheers,
Charles Buckley

Re: My 1969 Fiat 124 Resto!
Looks great Charles! I want to do the same on a 78 124. Mine has rust in the usual places. The rear end looks great. How did you clean it up? Did you sand blast it ? The reason I ask is I just purchased a sand blaster w/ glass beads.
Re: My 1969 Fiat 124 Resto!
Stripped the car of all its fixtures and fittings and spent an unbeleivable amount of hours rubbing her down with a medium paper on a small sander to get her started. They where so many layers of paint and bad blemishes and horrific repair work that had been made. Primed, Wet and dry, filled, Primed, Wet and dry etc etc.... Getting those beautiful Pininfarina lines has been extremly hard.
One thing that I would say is that due to EU regs over here in the UK, we had primed the final few coats in Zinc 182 and due to "environmental issues" the paint shop we are going to use only use water based paints now, so double check.
I can see sandblasting been the easier and quicker route to take.
Cheers,
Charles

Re: My 1969 Fiat 124 Resto!
Well chaps and chapesses,
Today I went to see the progress of my Fiat being painted and when I turned the corner in the paint shop
I had the biggest grin from ear to ear, it was so big you could have parked a 124 in my mouth sideways!
I think Im going to call her "Little Blue"
The Blue is Rover Denim Blue. Although its not an original or period colour, Im sure you will agree, the colour brings out the beautiful Pininfarina lines very nicely.
The sills by the way are to put on on completion in blue.
There is light at the end of the tunnel!!!!!
Enjoy and thanks for looking!

Re: My 1969 Fiat 124 Resto!
I can see why you were grinning so big. She's looking beautiful. You're right, that color does show the lines very well.
If it wasn't for fear of getting run over by Washington DC commuters, I'd consider that color although I don't know if I could ever get my cars body smooth enough. Small, low cars need BRIGHT! colors to attract the notice of the SUV drivers at my oh-dark-thirty commute time, I may have to go with flourescent orange truck bed liner
Thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
Jay
