any one have humming birds in there yard?
i am trying to attract them this years, i have 3 feeders and a few plants they like
but one nite i was standing by the flowers and there was this CREATURE looks like a moth/bee type sticking his head in the flowers, i was so excited that i tried to take photos of it but i was dumb founded and deleted every photo i took because it was not right, so i did not get any period, anyways it was called a moth humming bird. i have never seen one in my life ( 58)
it was aprox 2 inch long, from just looking at it and how deep the flower is and him./her being in it head first
THAT WAS EXCITING

Re: humming birds
We have two hummer feeders in our back yard that my wife has to fill every day and a half. We see a lot of Rufus hummers - with the very colourful collars.

hummingbirds are very common in phoenix. they actually perform most of the pollenizing. bees are pretty rare. My granddaughter spent so much time near the hummingbirds, they started to ignore her allowing her to get some fabulous pictures. They also built a nest in their basketball hoop and they have pix of babies cracking out of their eggs. Eggs are the size of the jelly bean.

Re: humming birds
Lots of them in my yard. I don't have a hummingbird feeder, just lots of flowering plants.

We only get one species here on the East Coast, but they are incredibly maneuverable! Their nests look like they were made in a machine shop; a tiny perfect hemisphere, constructed mostly of hair. In Springtime, dispose of your and your pet's hair where songbirds can use it. I put it in the suet feeder, which is empty after Winter. I disappears in a week.azruss wrote:They also built a nest in their basketball hoop ...

Re: humming birds
Of all the wildlife around my home -- which ranges all the way from bears and foxes to little red newts -- my favorites are the hummingbirds.
We keep one feeder hanging on the porch just a few yards from our reading chairs. During the summer there will be a bird there every few minutes. But about 15 or so feet away, on the corner of the porch, there is a quince tree and especially when it is in bloom the birds prefer that natural nectar to the syrup in the feeder. Then the continuous humming from multiple birds is amazing
Fun stuff. Apart, perhaps, from the drivers seat of my Spider that porch is my favorite place to be in Summer.
