ON MY 81 THE BOTTOM HAS TO COME OUT THEN THERE ARE TWO SCREWS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOP SECTION .... UNSCREW THOSE AND OUT COMES THE SEAT

Most people don't use the top two screws and just slide the top tabs in place that keep the top of the seat tight and the below seat holds top seat in place.
