replaced tower gasket and now
Greetings, thanks for all the help, I replaced the cam tower (exhaust) gasket but even the new one is still leaking. and now the timing mark is fluctuating like a tachometer ( increases and decreases) any suggestions? 78 fiat 1.8l

the leak means your cam tower or head is not flat. If the timing mark is moving up and down with RPM then you are watching the spark advance work. If it is jumping around randomly, see if the dizzy is vibrating. may have a bind in the gear drive.

thanks for responding, this site is filled with great people who are willing to share info. The fluctuation is while engine is at idle, holding timing light on mark and watching, not reving engine. I was using the tach statement as a visual but the fluctuation is at idle, would it help to use spary adhesive on gasket? and what is dizzy?

dizzy = me most of the time, but also means distributor.

your timing belt may not be tensioned correctly, causing lots of fluctuation in the belt

Do you have an electronic ignition?
If yes....
I had worn wiring from the magnetic pickup to the igniter module and could not get the car to hold timing. I replaced it with the item pictured here:

and everything was rock solid afterwards.
