The Junk Is Locked In The Trunk

Post by FirstSpider »

Ok so I havent even owned my Spider for a week yet, it's a 1981 2000. I had just gotten back from the auto parts store with my purchases, I threw them in the trunk and closed the lid, only to find that the lock is missing and I can't figure out how to get it back open, it's really quite embarassing not even knowing how to open one's own trunk, I checked the owner's manual, but that was no help, I'm hoping one of you can enlighten me on how to get it back open.

What do you mean by the lock is missing? Is there only a hole there?
If so, then see if you can find a plastic lever. You need to pull it toward the right to open the trunk.

If this fails, remove the license plate and drill a hole exactly in the middle, 2-3 inches down from the trunk opening.
The insert a screwdriver and push the latch's lever to the right to pop the trunk open.
Maybe you can ask someone with a similar car on here to measure how far down the hole needs to be. I have an earlier Spider with a different lock arrangement, sorry.

There was a late spider at the junk yard with a locked trunk. I was able to pop the trunk by sticking the dip stick thru the upper right license plate mounting hole. There was good stuff in there, too!

Check out this post about getting into a locked trunk, gives spec's about drilling behind the plate to pop the lock.

The license plate drill bit works every time. However, i'm still a little confused. how did you open the trunk to put parts in it in the first place. Was the trunk open when you purchased the car. I've left the keys in the trunk and now have an extra set around so I wont have to drill a hole to fix on the current spider. A few years back at a car show in PA my key opened another guys trunk when he locked himself out. Blind luck.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!
