Fixes for old style door handle and locks

Post by velozi »

Both my 76 external door locks are having difficulties with the keys engaging to the vertical lock position. Some times I have to try multiple times for the lock to work.
After locking you can tap the handle and the cilinder unlocks. So it is not locking properly.
Is this something on the inside that I can fix myself or do I need to take it to a locksmith?

If they are anything like the newer pull handles, take the door card off and the inspection covers. You'll have access to the back of the mechanisim. A couple of 8 mm nuts might release the assembly and then on the bench give it a good clean and lube. Watch the lock rod and two plastic ends, they get brittle and break easily, only have to release one end though.. Not a difficult evolution just a bit fiddly in the confined space.
If the assembly is pooched, go to the parts wanted and see if there is a parts car with locks available.

Likely the length of the rod that goes from the lock cylinder to the lock mechanism is wrong, so it is not locking all the way.
