Need Advice/Help on Removing Oil Seals

Post by RRoller123 »

Sorry, need help on a coupl emore things to get this job done.

How do you get the old camshaft seals out? Do you just hammer a couple of picks or screwdrivers right through the metal housing on either side and pry them out? I am concerned that if I pry them out by getting the tools in the groove along the shafts themselves that I could damage the shafts.

Based upon the force it took to get the Aux Shaft Seal out (with the housing off the car) I would expect that a seal puller would NOT work, couldn't possibly apply enough force.

I have also been trying to take the crankshaft seal housing off, all the bolts are removed (housing and pan), but the damned thing will not budge along the bottom, seems like it has bonded eternally with the oil pan gasket. I would like to take it off and install the seal while the cover is off the car. What do you guys do for this?

Sorry for so many posts on this, but this is a pita the first time attempted for sure!

i bought a seal puller from harbor freight. it looks like a narrow claw hammer with a claw on both ends. works ok. you can put a sheet metal screw in the seal and use a claw hammer or a wonderbar to pull it out. if you can get to the back side, you can use a socket of the appropriate size and tap it out from the back.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about putting a sheetmetal screw in there. I think I will do that.

For the CS Housing, I think I will just leave it on and put the seal in in place. That thing won't come off without major damage to the oil pan gasket, which opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.

If yoiu damage the Oil pan gsk, just use some silicone under the CS seal housing.
Most of the time I just hammer a small screwdriver into seal then pry it out.

I ended up driving my awl into them in about 4 or 5 places around and eventually they all came out. Thanks for the help. The first time through this is a little nerve wracking. So everything goes well back together, and now the timing belt won't go on, as I was sent the wrong one, too short. $10 gets it, I have a posting in "Parts For Sale".
