Re: how fast is a F1 car?
I was lucky enough to attend the now defunct U.S. Grand Prix in Indy a few years ago.I love all forms of racing but those F1 cars put on an awesome display. The sound of a V-10 engine pulling 18000 rpm's is something you have to hear in person! I got to see Michael Schumacher dominate in a Ferrari w/ a blue Fiat emblem on the nose!!

I was a staff writer for the SCCA/Cal Club magazine back when the Long Beach Grand Prix ran F1 cars, so I got to cover the race from various corners and I'll agree about the sound. To hear those engines screaming down Ocean Front Bl was like hearing a banshee wail
Re: how fast is a F1 car?
Awhile back, they use to run F1's through downtown Detroit for the Grand Prix. Talk about loud...Anytime you race those engines inside a major city surrounded by very tall buildings, there is no where for the sound to go. It just kept bouncing off the glass and buildings till you went deaf.
Thankfully, they moved them to out on the water, on Belle Isle, an island between Detroit and Canada. Hey guys, Danika will be there again. I wonder how much it would cost to have a tiny Fiat Spider logo put on her car?

Poor little Fiat! That brings back memories of me in my Fiat getting hunted down by all those BMWs and Mazdas at VIR.

Re: how fast is a F1 car?
The USGP in Watkins Glen, NY is one of my fondest memories. We camped there several years, and in early October, upstate New York could deliver almost any kind of weather. One year of 35°F and rain is firmly etched in my memory!
The best part was 0800, when the pits offically opened. Some team or another was always ready to start immediately, and the sound of a single F1 engine coming to life in the thick morning air of the countryside is something I'll never forget. It first sounds just like a phlegmatic chain-smoker arising from bed. Folks would emerge from their tents and campers, some looking and sounding worse for wear from the previous evening's activities.
Here's the Ferrari shrine in my office, with a few mementos:

That's a really nice Ferrari model. I especially like the snow plough up front and the shopping tray (or is it a push bar?) at the back.
F1? Pure magic! Schumacher? Brilliant!! Lewis Hamilton? Simply amazing!!! Did you see him win the Monaco Grand Prix yesterday? IN THE RAIN.

Re: how fast is a F1 car?
Thank you. I think they still make this plastic model.
Monaco - yeah, I TiVo'd it, and watched it later in the day. Unfortunately, the time allotted ran over, and I missed the last three minutes! Fortunately, they re-aired it last night, and I was able to see the finish and the interviews. Lewis was as excited and animated as I've ever seen him.
The only thing marring our telecasts is the inane blathering of the announcers. You're watching this great in-car camera footage; the driver sawing away on the wheel, revs all over the dial fighting for traction, rain streaming over the lens ... and these clowns are yammering non-stop "firstsectorzeropointthreetwonineeightsecondsectorthridsectorBRILLIANTabsolutelyBRILLIANT!!" And then they're reading to you information that is being displayed on the bottom of the screen like you're a freaking moron.
I guess we should just be grateful that we get coverage at all ...
