fuel pump
on a recent trip( 80) miles with my 72 124, the car bog down and sputterd 5 times at the rate of 80 miles per hr. i am sure it is the fuel pump and or filter. seems when i looked for the fuel filter in the the engine bay OFF THE CARB there was on there, i looked under the car just a quick look and in the truck off the tank and seen none, i do plan on jacking the back up of the car and get a closer look , but my question is , why would there be one under the car? or why is there none at the carb?
thanks
thanks

Re: fuel pump
Not being smart, but you need to correct your spelling and grammer/punctuation for your statements / question/s to make sence.
There should be a filter at the bottm of the tank pickup. Thould be one in the pump and thirdly one inside the top of the carb.

Re: fuel pump
your carby could also need an overhaul, more than likely for a 72 it wouldn't be under the car, but it is possible??

Re: fuel pump
there should be a filter between the fuel pump and carb. There is an screen in the inlet of the carb, it's removeable and can be cleaned. There is also a sock on the pickup in the tank. I'd look closely at the integrity of the fuel hoses from the tank. A split hose will cause a problem on the suction side of the pump. There is also a short fuel hose near the left rear trailing arm.

Re: fuel pump
I think a 72 would have a mechanical pump on the drivers side of the engine block under the intake manifold. Just follow the fuel supply hose from the carb down to the pump.
Re: fuel pump
As So Cal Mark says, and I stated, when it left the factory, there would have been a (probably brass) screen sock crimped to the end of the tank pick-up, a brass or nylon screen filter (removable) within the mechanical pump and a (probably) nylon / plastic (call it what you will) sock filter in the float needle chamber in the carb/s.
Certainly in 72, they were not fitted with the modern type throw away $2 inline filters that most carby cars have now.
Goodness knows what may or not have been tampered with or damaged over the years, but before you go exploring to check them, you'd best get new gaskets for top of carb/s and pump as unlikely you'll save them. If you want an inline see-thru one probably easiest to fit between pump & carb as that is shortest hose and at 40 yrs old you will have to replace it.
Use EFI fuel hose - about $3 a foot.

is it just me? Or are there five misspelled words in this post, and about that many grammar mistakes as well?
Now that there's funny, I don't care who y'are!
honestly, 124cs0, I think fiat218's posts threw me for a loop at first too. But we've come to understand that He's just like the rest of us... good at some stuff, not so hot at other stuff. For him, the "other stuff" seems to include typing and spelling!
But man can the guy stir-up some S*^t!!! He's better'n ME that way! (And I'm a PRO s*^t-stirrer! )
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

One spelling / typing mistake actually. I'd like you to point out the rest. Oh and I learnt English spelling of English. Not your American version.maytag wrote: is it just me? Or are there five misspelled words in this post, and about that many grammar mistakes as well?
Re: fuel pump
I've just read this thread lead posting again and am even more baffled.
Fiat 218's profile says he owns 3 spiders - 69, 72 & 80, so why is he asking us where the fuel filters are ? They can't all have been bodgied by previous owners, surely ?

i asked just because the others are visible to me. on the line from the pump to the carb, so one day i have a problem with my pump so i decided to order a new pump then just get a in line filter to replace the old one, well obviously there was not as to where the other's have them, so i looked for one, i could not find one!!
so i asked WHERE WOULD THERE BE ONE
sorry that it BAFFLED you, that i could not see one

Re: fuel pump
Dood.... Lighten-up! sometimes your posts seem (to me) to be just a little harsh and condescending. I don't know if you mean them that way. I don't even know if others see them the same way. It could just be me? but either way, I'm just trying to lighten it up a little.124cso wrote:One spelling / typing mistake actually. I'd like you to point out the rest. So, in an effort to be of assistance, and as an aid, I've quoted your original text below. Looking at spelling only, your word in red, and a revision next to it, underlined. I'm not sure how many of these mistakes can be blamed on the English losing the war?
so, anyway, whatever. I'm not sure any of these spellings apply in Minnesota anyway. But I know that I ain't that worried about it.124cso wrote:Not being smart, but you need to correct your spelling and grammer grammar/punctuation for your statements / question/s questions to make sence sense.

Re: fuel pump
thanks for the good laugh, guys. Surprised anyone had the balls to stick their toe into this fire pit.
My guess is that 50% of the stuff posted have spelling or grammatical errors.....including my posts.
In my 50+ years of working various jobs and owning several businesses, i have come to the following conclusion. Command of the english language is not a good indicator of intelligence, street smarts, work ability, education, or trustworthiness.
